Stillness

Prompt from Poetic Bloomings: write about preparing for Christmas

Not
in frenzied
fingers nor cacophany
of voices, flour-dusted kitchens
nor pine-needle strewn floors, neither
rush of shopping nor gleam of giftwrapping,
but in the stillness I prepare. In the calm
of a Silent Night with its pedestrian shepherds,
stinky sheep and stubborn donkeys; in the obscurity
of a manger, the mess of hay within its stalls, cluttered
by mice and ugly with stench; in the comfort of a
newborn son, all the hopes and dreams of his parents
and the world, silently sleeping in a cattle’s trough;
in the miracle and mystery of the baby:
in the stillness
of His peace, I
prepare for
Christmastime
